[002] Scope of Works
The development incorporated a combination of:
- Major Project (MP) Western Power Design and Construct works.
- Minor Services (MS) External Design and Construct works.
- Staged HV and LV reticulation design.
- Transformer and switchgear substation planning and integration.
- Coordination with Western Power for network augmentation and staged energisation.
[003] Key Challenges
The estate had a projected maximum electrical demand of approximately 15 MVA, significantly exceeding the available capacity within the existing local distribution network.
To service this demand, the electrical design required:
- Strategic staging of network infrastructure over multiple development phases.
- Installation of more than 17 transformer and switchgear substation sites throughout the estate.
- Careful load balancing and future capacity planning to ensure each stage could be energised without compromising the broader network.
A major network augmentation was ultimately required. As part of Stage 4B, a new 22 kV high-voltage feeder was designed from the Kenwick Zone Substation to provide the additional network capacity necessary to support the estate’s long-term electrical requirements.
[004] Project Outcomes
- Successfully developed a staged electrical servicing strategy for a complex multi-stage industrial estate.
- Delivered designs integrating both Western Power MP and MS Design and Construct processes.
- Facilitated a major 22 kV network augmentation to accommodate approximately 15 MVA of industrial load.
- Planned and coordinated the installation of 17+ transformer and switchgear substation sites across the development.
- Worked closely with Western Power to manage network constraints, staging, approvals and future capacity requirements, ensuring the estate could be delivered efficiently while supporting long-term industrial growth.
