[002] The Challenge
As a brownfield redevelopment, the project presented several significant engineering challenges. The site contained extensive existing electrical infrastructure, including multiple distribution transformers, high voltage (HV) and low voltage (LV) underground cables, and associated network assets that conflicted with the proposed development layout.
The project also required the delivery of electrical services to predominantly townhouse lots via service pits rather than traditional lot connections, while maintaining flexibility for the future apartment developments.
Careful planning and staging were essential to ensure continuity of supply to surrounding customers while enabling the safe removal and relocation of existing network infrastructure.

UPD developed a comprehensive electrical servicing strategy that included:
- Electrical master planning for the complete three-stage development.
- Advanced works design to facilitate the removal and relocation of existing HV and LV infrastructure.
- Relocation of existing distribution transformers and associated network assets.
- Detailed underground HV and LV network design.
- Service pit design to efficiently supply the townhouse developments.
- Private street lighting design throughout the development to achieve both compliance and high-quality urban amenity.
- Coordination with Western Power, civil designers, and the project team to ensure all utility infrastructure was integrated into the overall development program.
By carefully sequencing the advanced works and coordinating network modifications, UPD minimised construction risks and enabled each stage to proceed efficiently while maintaining network reliability.

The Nedlands Reserve development demonstrates UPD’s ability to successfully deliver complex brownfield electrical infrastructure projects where existing network assets must be carefully managed alongside new development requirements.
