[001] Project Overview

UPD was engaged to deliver the electrical servicing design for the UPD6180 Orion Precinct, a large multi-stage industrial development comprising six development stages. The project included the design of extensive electrical infrastructure, staged public lighting, advanced works and utility coordination to support the progressive delivery of the estate.

With a projected maximum electrical demand of 19.72 MVA, the development required significant network planning and close coordination with Western Power and other utility providers to ensure infrastructure was delivered efficiently and in line with the staged construction program.

[002] Scope of Works

UPD’s services included:

  • Staged HV and LV reticulation design across six development stages.
  • Extensive public lighting design, including additional lighting packages and advanced works.
  • Coordination of Western Power network augmentation requirements.
  • Utility coordination and management of major telecommunications asset relocations.
  • Design of compliant V Category road lighting for key transport infrastructure.

[003] Key Challenges

The Orion Precinct presented several significant engineering and coordination challenges.

The development’s ultimate electrical demand of 19.72 MVA required the installation of three 22 kV high-voltage feeders to provide sufficient network capacity and maintain supply reliability. Fortunately, the estate’s close proximity to the local Zone Substation enabled these network augmentations to be completed without extensive upstream reinforcement works, simplifying the overall servicing strategy.

A major component of the project involved the relocation of an extensive Telstra telecommunications network along Russell Road. Approximately 10 kilometres of existing telecommunications infrastructure required relocation to accommodate the road and subdivision works. This required detailed staging, coordination with Telstra, civil designers and construction contractors to minimise disruption while maintaining continuity of telecommunications services.

The project also included the design of V Category road lighting for the Russell Road intersection. UPD undertook detailed lighting calculations and design to ensure the installation complied with the relevant Australian Standards and Main Roads Western Australia requirements, delivering a safe and compliant lighting solution for this high-traffic intersection.

[004] Project Outcomes

  • Delivered electrical servicing designs for a six-stage industrial estate with an ultimate demand of 19.72 MVA.
  • Designed and coordinated the installation of three high-voltage feeders to support long-term network capacity.
  • Successfully managed the staged delivery of extensive public lighting and advanced works packages.
  • Coordinated the relocation of approximately 10 km of Telstra telecommunications infrastructure, supporting both the subdivision and associated road upgrades.
  • Delivered compliant V Category lighting for the Russell Road intersection, meeting all applicable Australian Standards and Main Roads WA requirements.
  • Worked collaboratively with Western Power, Telstra, civil consultants and project stakeholders to facilitate the successful delivery of complex electrical and utility infrastructure across all stages of the development.
